Chamberlain garage door remote replacement: identify yours
Chamberlain and LiftMaster are made by the same company and share a lot of their remote systems. The quickest way to identify yours is the learn button on the motor.
Which Chamberlain system do you have?
Most Chamberlain openers use one of the company’s rolling-code systems:
- Security+, Chamberlain’s original rolling-code system.
- Security+ 2.0, the newer version.
- Older openers may use a fixed code set with a row of DIP switches.
Which remote works with which motor comes down to the system, the frequency and when the motor was made, rather than the name on the front. That’s why a LiftMaster remote sometimes works a Chamberlain motor and sometimes doesn’t.
The colour of the learn button on the motor is the best clue, because Chamberlain uses it to mark the system. Photograph it and we’ll match it.
Security+ is rolling code, so a universal copying remote won’t work. Rolling code vs fixed code explains why.
No clear label? What to photograph
Start with the learn button:
- The learn button on the motor unit, close enough that we can see its colour. It’s often on the side or back of the motor, and sometimes under the light cover.
- The motor label, which gives the model and often the frequency.
- The remote, front and back, if you still have one.
What to photograph shows what a useful photo looks like.
