How to teach a Hörmann HSM 4 handset to an HE, HEI or HER receiver

For: Hörmann HE 1, HE 2, HE 3, HEI 1, HEI 2, HER 1, HER 2 or HER 4 receiver on the same frequency as your handset

Before you start

• Stand at least 1 metre from the receiver.
• Keep people and objects out of the way of the door while you teach it.
• The receiver that comes in a set with an HSM 4 is already taught to the handset’s top button, so you only need this for extra buttons or a new handset.

HE 1, HE 2 or HE 3 receiver

1. Press the receiver’s P button briefly. The red LED starts to flash slowly. On an HE 2, press P once for channel 1 or twice for channel 2. On an HE 3, press it once, twice or three times for channels 1, 2 or 3 (the LED then flashes in groups of that number).
2. Press the handset button you want and hold it for at least 1 second.
3. When the receiver has learned the code, the red LED flashes faster.
4. Release the handset button. When the flashing stops, the receiver is ready. Test it.

• If nothing is taught within 20 seconds of pressing P, the LED goes out and you start again. Hörmann’s 2005 edition says 30 seconds, so don’t leave it long.
• To stop without teaching anything, press P briefly twice (HE 1), three times (HE 2) or four times (HE 3). The red LED goes out.

HEI 1, HEI 2, HER 1, HER 2 or HER 4 receiver

1. Press the red P button of the channel you want briefly. HEI 1 and HER 1 have one, HER 2 has two and HER 4 has four. The red LED flashes slowly. The HEI 2 has just one P button: press it once for channel 1, or twice within 2 seconds for channel 2 (the LED then flashes at half speed).
2. Press and hold the handset button for at least 1 second, from at least 1 metre away.
3. The red LED flashes faster when the code has been learned. Release the handset button and test it.

• The time-out is 30 seconds. To stop on an HEI 2, press P three times within 2 seconds.

Good to know

• Which handset models these steps are written for: Hörmann’s HE manual names the HSM 4 in its 868 MHz, 433 MHz and 40 MHz versions. The 26.975 MHz HS 4 and HSM 4 are in its separate instructions.

How the receiver is wired to your door, the DIL-switch functions on the HEI and HER, and the older Hörmann operators with a built-in 868 MHz or 40 MHz receiver. The HS 4, HSE 2, HSM 2, HSD 2 and HSP 4 at 868 MHz aren’t named in these manuals, so we haven’t listed this guide for them.
