How to add a LiftMaster remote using the green Smart button

For: Openers with a green button marked Smart and a green light beside it (MotorLift 1000 to 5500, Sesam 200, the HC-433 range and the 27 MHz openers)

Before you start

• Find the green Smart button on the opener. On the 433 MHz models the maker’s German instructions put it on the back of the opener head.
• On the 751E, 752E and 754E the second button is normally only there for code-switch use, so use the main one.

Add the remote at the opener

1. Press and hold the button you want to use on the remote, and keep holding it.
2. While still holding it, press and release the green Smart button on the opener.
3. The opener light flashes once. That is the code accepted. Now release the remote button.

• Chamberlain’s own warning: if you release the remote button before the opener light flashes, the opener has not accepted the code.

Copying an older remote using its code switches

The 27 MHz models and the 4332E have physical code switches inside, so a second remote can be matched to the first without going near the opener. The other 433 MHz models have no switches, so don’t go looking for them.

1. Take the battery cover off both remotes and remove the case screw.
2. Pull each housing apart carefully and lift the top off.
3. Set the code switches in the new remote to exactly the same positions as the original. The three positions are marked +, and 0. A pen or small screwdriver moves them.
4. Put both cases back together and refit the battery covers.
5. Hold the button on either remote, press and release the green Smart button on the opener, wait for the light to flash, then let go.

Good to know

• The 27 MHz models take a 9 volt battery, which Chamberlain says should last at least a year. If the little test light is dim or doesn’t come on, change it.
• If a brand new remote does nothing but the wall button still works, check whether the opener is in lock mode: a flashing wall control button means it is ignoring all remotes.

Deleting remotes

• Hold the green Smart button until the green light beside it goes out, about 6 seconds. Every remote the opener knows is erased and they all have to be added again.

The 418 MHz models (4180E, 4182E, 4183E and 4185E) use the same green button but also have code switches, and aren’t listed on this page yet. Openers with an orange LEARN button or a yellow round button work differently.
