How to add a LiftMaster or Chamberlain remote using the orange LEARN button

For: MotorLift ML700, ML750, ML850, the HC series, or LiftMaster LM60 and LM80: openers with an orange LEARN button

Before you start

• Find the orange LEARN button on the opener head. On these models it is usually on the side.
• Careful: there is a second orange button behind the light lens, next to a black one. Those two move the door’s travel limits, not the remote. The LEARN button is the one with an indicator light beside it.
• If your opener has no bulb fitted, you will hear two clicks instead of seeing the light flash.

The usual way, at the opener

1. Press and release the orange LEARN button on the opener. The indicator light glows steadily for 30 seconds.
2. Within those 30 seconds, press and hold the button on the remote you want to use.
3. Release it when the opener light blinks, or when you hear two clicks. That is the code accepted.

• If you let go of the remote button before the light blinks, the opener has not taken the code. Start again.
• If that doesn’t work, try the other order, which is what the leaflet in the handset box says: hold the remote button down first, then press and release the orange LEARN button, then let the remote button go when the light flashes. Both come from Chamberlain and neither can damage anything.

If you can’t safely reach the opener

This only works if you have the multi-function wall panel, the one with a push bar plus separate Light and Lock buttons. A plain single-button wall switch won’t do it.

1. Press and hold the button on the remote you want to use.
2. Still holding it, press and hold the LIGHT button on the wall panel.
3. Still holding both, press the push bar on the wall panel. All three are now held together.
4. Release everything when the opener light blinks, or you hear two clicks.

Good to know

• If a brand new remote does nothing but the wall button still works, check lock mode. When the wall control button is flashing, the opener ignores every remote. Hold the Lock button on the wall panel for 2 seconds to clear it. This is the most common reason a remote looks faulty when it isn’t.
• These are 433 MHz rolling-code remotes on the Chamberlain 84xxx models, and the maker’s leaflet lists the openers they fit: MotorLift ML700, ML750, ML850 and the HC range.
• Chamberlain’s leaflets say the lithium batteries should last up to five years. To open the case, prise it apart at the point marked Open on the back, using the visor clip or a screwdriver blade. The 94334E is different: it takes two CR2025 cells and opens with a coin in the slot on the back, turning anti-clockwise.

Deleting remotes

• Hold the orange LEARN button until the indicator light goes out, about 6 seconds. That erases every remote and keypad the opener knows, so you then have to add each one again. There is no way to remove just one.

Not covered on this page

Openers with a yellow round button, a green Smart button or an S button work differently and aren’t covered here. The erase time is different on those too, so don’t carry the 6 seconds across.
